•INTERACT: JUNE QUESTION OF THE MONTH:
Tell us about your issues with classroom management and grading of students. Visit www.menc.org/contest/quesform.htm to take the survey and view results instantly.

•A Message from Mike Reynolds, cellist of the Muir Quartet

Greetings from Fall Foliage!

As sure as summer is here, fall will come as well, and with it the brilliant colors and strains of beautiful chamber music coming from Rockport homes and its historic Opera House. I'd love to invite you to join us this fall; we're still in need of a few passionate violinists and violists to join us Oct. 6-9. But please hurry; we only have spaces for a few groups left.

Promote School Music - Celebrate the Anthem's Anniversary on September 14, 2006!
Add your voice on September 14 when schools and communities across the nation will be singing "The Star Spangled Banner" to celebrate the anniversary of our national anthem. Last year, more than 1,700 schools and organizations participated in a September 14 celebration. TV stations sent cameras and reporters to schools for live coverage of the kids singing, and more than 100 newspapers covered these school music programs. Plan an event to showcase the important role music teachers play in passing our American heritage from one generation to the next. For your event this year, contact your local teachers, parents, schools, and community leaders to join in singing this song together. Visit www.thenationalanthemproject.org/sept14.html to learn more about participating on September 14! For more information, contact Stephanie Jones at StephanieJ@menc.org.

•NOMINATIONS INVITED FOR THE MUSIC EDUCATORS HALL OF FAME

The Music Educators Hall of Fame was established by MENC in 1984 to honor those individuals who are considered to be the most highly regarded professional leaders in American music education. Their contributions may be in any field of specialization. Nominations are currently being solicited. Neither the nominee nor the nominator must be a member of MENC. Living nominees must be at least 55 years of age.

For information on the nomination procedures or for a list of current Hall of Fame members, visit the MENC Web site and find links to the Hall of FAME in the index under "H" (the direct url is: http://www.menc.org/information/histinfo/guidelines.html ). Nominations are solicited on a biennial cycle. Up to three persons may be inducted each biennium. The deadline for nomination of candidates to be inducted in 2008 is February 1, 2007.

Who do you think belongs in the Music Educators Hall of Fame? Don't assume that an individual you believe should be in the Hall of Fame is already a member or that someone else will nominate him or her. Check
the list of Hall of Fame honorees at http://www.menc.org/information/histinfo/Historicalinfohall.html and submit a nomination if your candidate is not listed.

•CONGRATULATIONS AND MANY THANKS
- to all that participated in the All State Festival and Conference at UMO over the last few days. Special thanks go to Nancy Cash-Cobb (Conference Organizer) and Rob Westerberg (Festival Organizer) for all of their hard work and dedication to MMEA.

All three concerts were a pleasure to hear and showed the hard work of our three conductors and the students in each ensemble. Our Managers: Ray Libby (Band), Kim Murphy (Chorus), Linda Vaillancourt/Margaret Hopkins (Orchestra)and Jon Carsley (Exhibit Manager) also deserve a huge round of applause.

Numerous others worked on the conference in several different capacities and are definitely not forgotten! We look forward to All State 2007 at USM in Gorham.

•M.L.R. proposed revision for Visual and Performing Arts has been posted online for the public to see
- at:
http://www.maine.gov/education/lres/review/vpa.html

1) PLEASE take the time to read the 6 items listed on the page before getting to item #7, the "Proposed Revised Standards".

2) Once you have done all this and thoroughly gone over it, it is very important to reserve some time to fill out the online survey (item #8).
This will be a bit of a time consuming process, but it is VERY thorough and your information will be brought back to the committee directly. There is room here for general feedback, specific line-by-line feedback and even a chance for you to offer a narrative if you wish on every single item.

The deadline for viewing the site and completing the survey is May 31st... so time IS an issue here.

•PERFORMING GROUPS FOR EASTERN DIVISION CONFERENCE NEEDED!
- The deadline for performing groups to submit application materials to apply for performance at the Eastern Division Conference, March 9-11, 2007 in Hartford, Connecticut has been extended to MAY 31, 2006.

Anyone who may have thought about doing this, now might be a good opportunity. Just record three selections live at your spring concert (assuming it's in May and you haven't had it yet) or use a recent live performance recording and submit it with the forms from MENC.

Some of you may remember two years ago, we nominated a middle school jazz band to play in Baltimore because they had no one to invite. There are a lot of Maine groups that I can think of that would make a wonderful contribution to this conference.

All application materials postmarked by MAY 31, 2006 to MENC and the appropriate state presidents will be accepted.

State presidents will have until JUNE 15, 2006 to submit their recommendations to MENC for the Eastern Division Conference Planning Committee to review.

Application materials currently received by MENC and the appropriate State Presidents will be accepted and reviewed.

If you have questions or need a Performing Group Official Audition Application, please feel free to contact MENC's meeting assistant Sumer Ahmad at sumera@menc.org or 1-800-336-3768 ext. 115, Monday - Friday from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm eastern time.
