2008 Professional Issues Conference
Mind the Gap: Strategies for Closing the Achievement Gap
March 29 – Abromson Center, Portland
The Maine Education Association invites proposals for its 2008 Professional Issues Conference, Mind the Gap: Strategies for Closing the Achievement Gap, to be held March 29, 2008 at the Abromson Center, University of Southern Maine, Portland. MEA members and Maine Department of Education staff who have contributions to share with educators on the topic are encouraged to submit a proposal to present.
In order to be responsive to the diverse needs and interests of MEA members in looking at the whole school community being involved in improving the learning and working environment, we are asking for proposals on such potential themes and topics as:
· Instructional and learning strategies
· Curriculum
· Assessment and evaluation
· Technology in the classrooms
· Health and safety issues
· Diversity
· Student behavior
Each presenter will be asked to do two (2) one and one half hour sessions back-to-back (so presenters will be doing either 2 morning sessions or 2 afternoon sessions). Send two (2) copies of proposals on the attached form to MEA. Proposals must be received by 5 PM on February 1. Although presenters serve on a contributing basis, mileage will be paid. In order to ensure that presenters do not incur out of pocket expenses, hotel and dinner the night before will be provided for those required to travel. We will, of course, assist with copying materials as well.
Proposals will be read by a Conference Committee. Information may be edited for space and clarity. Selections will be made by the Committee and decisions will be e-mailed to all applicants by February 15, 2008.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this form and for your work to improve education in Maine. For your convenience, the form is available online at www.maine.nea.org.

Jazz Improvisation Weekend January 19-20, 2007 at the University of Southern Maine. (Please go to the Jazz Page for further details!)
Students will have the
opportunity to play jazz and attend a variety of clinics. Clinicians will cover issues such
as, you guessed it, the art of jazz improvisation, and issues concerning the student’s
own major instrument. In addition to this, a great deal of time will be spent focusing on
jazz improvisation while performing in a combo setting. Throughout the weekend,
students will have ample time to work with the USM School of Music jazz faculty.
If you have students that are interested in attending, please respond to the
manager of the event, Rob Duquette, ASAP to reserve a space. Rob may be reached by
telephone at (207)780-5126 or by e-mail at robduquette@verizon.net. Please include
your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, the name of your school and the
grade you are currently attending.
